For 8 part SATB Choir (with off-stage singers)
Length- 5:30 Minutes
Program Notes -
In Genesis of the Old Testament, the Tower of Babel is constructed by man trying to reach God. They all speak the same language and are working together to reach God’s power. In this process, God recognizes their arrogance and blasphemy and strikes down on the tower, dispersing people across the land. As they are dispersed, they all begin to speak many different languages, where no one can understand one another. Aside from the specific example of the Tower of Babel, Babylon also represented “wickedness” throughout the Bible. This work reflects on the aftermath of Babylon and its wickedness, as well as symbolizes the events of the tower of Babel.
“Therefore, is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth,” (Genesis 11:9).
